The American Revolutionary War originally started between the new American colonies and the Kingdom of Great Britain, but grew to become a world war involving France, Spain and others. The war lasted from 1775 to 1783 and early in the fighting the new Americans took control. In 1776 the first flag, often called the Betsy Ross flag was adopted. Its main feature was the ring of 13 stars, to represent the original 13 colonies that America was fighting to free from the tyrannical Brits. And of course on July 4th the continental congress adopted our Declaration of Independence.
The thirteen original colonies that declared independence were: Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts Bay, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina, and Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.
